Wang Tiande was born in 1960 and graduated from the Chinese Painting Department of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now China Academy of Art). He received his PhD from the Calligraphy Department of the same school in 2010. Wang Tiande is famous for his avant-garde ink painting and his unique painting technique, which combines incense and Xuan paper to create a ethereal beauty. However, this was only incidental. In 2002, while creating in Paris, a cigarette butt accidentally fell on his paper, and the effect of burning and erosion inspired him to incorporate it into his painting, giving birth to his distinctive style. The emerging smudging technique layered on traditional ink painting is both ingenious and emotionally powerful.
The calligraphy and landscape burned and scorched are presented as hollowed-out, like a veil of mist, resisting the viewer's visual entry and passively hiding clues. This alienation brings infinite imagination, breaking the aesthetic taste of traditional ink painting. His works are collected by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Shanghai Museum of Art, the Hong Kong Museum of Art, and others. In 2022, he held a solo exhibition entitled "Little Mountain" at the Art Museum of Nanjing University of the Arts.
