Roby Dwi Antono was born in Java, Indonesia and currently resides in Yogyakarta, a city with a rich history. His artwork is considered "Urban art" and he is one of the artists who has recently caught the attention of the Asian contemporary art market. In high school, Roby studied graphic design. After graduating, he worked as a graphic designer for a company that specialized in research publications. He has loved drawing since he was young and taught himself to draw, without attending a formal art school. In 2012, he was invited to hold his first solo exhibition at Tirana Art House. After that, he decided to become a full-time artist. Since then, he has been invited to hold solo and group exhibitions in various parts of the world, including Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Australia, Paris, and Dubai.
Roby Dwi Antono draws inspiration from the works of many foreign artists. Among them, Mark Ryden and Takashi Murakami have had the most profound impact on his artistic creation. After seeing Mark Ryden's work "California Brown Bear," which features a surrealist painting style, Roby became interested in exploring this style. However, surreal elements, mysterious classical mythology, and a strange and childlike fantasy style often appear in his works. Roby's art is like a unique product of the historical background of Indonesia's contemporary society and the intermingling of foreign and local cultures. He appropriates and transforms visual art and culture to create a unique visual language and convey ideas through painting.
