Felix Treadwell, from the UK, currently lives and creates in Taipei. He holds a Master's degree in painting from the Royal College of Art in the UK and a Bachelor's degree in painting from Camberwell College of Arts. In 2017, he was selected as a young, influential artist for the Bloomberg New Contemporary Art Award in the UK. He officially started collaborating with Taipei's Dopeness Art Lab in 2020, and held a solo exhibition "Dominion" in March 2021. His recent solo exhibitions include "FEELO" at L21 Gallery in Spain and "Little Dark Fantasy" at Union Gallery in London, and he will participate in the group exhibition "San Damiano Sessions" at Carl Kostyal Gallery in Stockholm, Sweden and "Can't Wait to Meet You" at Primary Projects Gallery in Miami.
As a young person, Felix Treadwell was passionate about Japanese manga. Looking at his works, the droplet-shaped large eyes that dominate the image, the side profile looking into the distance, the flat, depthless backgrounds and characters, without a doubt suggest that the artist is a contemporary artist incorporating the cute Japanese element." He likes the human-sized scale, the eyes that are disproportionately large and overflowing, and the characters that resemble medieval tapestries or the free-moving characters in comic book narratives, and these characters do not directly look back at or stare at the viewer.
When asked about the nostalgia embedded in his works, he said, "Many elements come from my childhood and adolescence interests. I think this is a strong feeling: everyone yearns to return to the moment when they first discovered the world. It's difficult to have that feeling of exploring new things again as we grow older, so many of my works have that sense of a journey of discovering new things. All the characters are somewhat naive and ignorant, and therefore fragile and vulnerable, just like we are in our youth. This is what I want to convey through my works."
