金卷芳俊 YOSHITOSHI KANEMAKI (b.1972)

Japanese artist Yoshitoshi Kanemaki was born in Chiba prefecture, in 1972. He graduated from the sculpture department of Tama Art University in 1999. Kanemaki's works mainly consist of woodcarvings, which exhibit a surrealistic form and intricate craftsmanship. He believes that humans are full of contradictions, and through sculptures of human figures with different appearances, he portrays conflicting emotions, whether on the surface or those that have yet to be discovered within the depths of one's soul.

Therefore, Kanemaki often depicts his subjects with multiple arms and faces (Tahou) to express different mental states, using the duality or multiplicity of the subject to tell a story of the passing of time and the uncertainty of destruction. Kanemaki's sculptures usually feature two or more costumes and expressions, making viewers aware of their own perplexing and contradictory nature, as well as exploring the emotions deep within human nature. His works, which focus on the universally true aspects of humanity that have been influenced by the past, present, future, and the times, have received considerable attention.

"I have always believed that we humans live in an unstable world. In this chaotic state, I try to find the beauty and impurity that are simultaneously hidden in the human heart. These sculptural works can be seen as a reflection of the human psyche." - Yoshitoshi Kanemaki
