ZHONG CHENG

姚慶章 C.J. Yao (1941-2000)

C.J. Yao was born in Taichung, Taiwan. He graduated from the National Taiwan Normal University in 1965. He participated in the 10th Saint Paul International Biennale in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1970; later that year, he moved to New York to establish his artistic career. He passed away in the year 2000. He used to be an acclaimed guest professor at multiple major art institutes. He was also the co-founder of the “Era Painting Exhibition.” Between 1974 to 1984, he was acclaimed as one of the most important representative of American Photorealism. In the beginning of his artistic career, he demonstrated hyper-realist depiction of urban reflections, as he transitioned to his mid-life, his style naturally evolved into New Surrealism; and at last, in his late “Life Series” he integrated the expressions of the East and West through Post-Modern Symbolic Expression. In 1969, He received the Honor Award at the Fifth International Youth Art Exhibition in Tokyo. He exhibited over 100 shows internationally, including the United States, Japan, Germany, Canada, Belgium, Spain, Beijing, Hong Kong, Taiwan and more. His exhibitions include: (1995, Literature Center of China Daily News, Tainan); (1996, Kaohsiung City Heaven Accumulation- 50 Art Space Exhibition. Taiwan); (1999, Hsinchu Cultural Center, Taiwan); (2000, Longmen Art Gallery, Taipei)
