董陽孜 TONG YANG TZE (b.1942)
Tong Yang Tze of was born in Shanghai, China in 1942. She is an important modern calligraphy artist. Following her graduation from the National Normal University with a degree in fine arts, Tong Yang Tze continued to deepen her artistic studies in the United States, by completing her MA at the University of Massachusetts. Following her return to Taiwan, she began experimenting with Western theories of painting in combination with the lines and brushstrokes from Chinese Calligraphy. She is particularly known for her large-scale calligraphic pieces done in cursive script, her works are often described as vigorous, bold and unrestrained. In her earlier years, she worked in the style of Yan Zhen Qing Shu and Wei Bei. However, in recent years, her style transitioned to the style of Wang XI Zhi and Huai Su. In 1995, she was awarded the 4th Lion Art Creative Awards. Over the last forty years, she has held over sixty calligraphy exhibitions around the world including Germany, US, Canada, UK, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Her recent exhibition includes “Wind of Sincerity – Calligraphy and Sculpture by Tong Yang Tze” (2018, Hsinchu City Art Gallery, Taiwan); “Tong Yang Tze Art Exhibition” (2016, Eslite Art Gallery, Taipei); “Brush Beyond Space: Works of Tong Yang Tze” (2010, Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Hong Kong); “X Beyond O: Calligraphy – Sign – Space” (2009, MOCA, Taipei).
