井上有一 YUICHI INOUE (1916-1985)

Yuichi Inoue is a Japanese Avant-Garde calligrapher. He was born in Tokyo in 1916. Graduated from the Tokyo Prefectural Aoyama Normal School (now Tokyo Gakugei University). Post graduating, he became a teacher. In 1952, along with other artists’ friend, they founded the “Bokujin-kai” (Ink People Society), he became an important representative of this post-war art movement. With the original textured sumi-ink invented through a trial and error process, his one-character writing style has irresistible charm, and in an innovate reinterpretation to oriental traditional calligraphy. His works are highly appreciated at Documenta II in Kassel (Germany) and Carnegie International in New York. In Germany, Cologne based Gallery Rudolf Zwirner organizes his solo exhibition both in 1962 and 1965. He held many exhibitions oversea including Korea, China and Taiwan. His recent exhibitions include, “Far yet Close: Calligraphy by Inoue Yuichi” (2015, Musee Tomo, Tokyo, Japan); “The End of Modernity in Calligraphy: From Yuichi Inoue, Lee Ufan to Zhang Yu, Kuandu Museum of Fine Art” (2015, Taipei, Taiwan). “Sharjah Biennial 11” (2013, Sharjah Art Foundation, United Arab Emirates).
