Zhan was born in Liaoning. He entered Beijing College of Fine Art in 1948 and later on studied in Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He studied under Xu Beihong, Wu Zuoren. Zhan entered the Moscow Russian aristocrat painter’s studio to learn paint in 1955. Since 1957 he is the professor at Central Academy of Fine Arts. His works won the gold prize at National Art Exhibition and others. Currently, he is the Director of Chinese Artists Association and President of the Chinese Oil Painting Association.
