Born in Sichuan, China. Sanyu attended the Art College in Shanghai, and then went to Japan in 1919. In 1920, he went to France as part of the first wave of Chinese artists to study in France. When he stayed at Paris, he had closely friendships with Xu Beihong and Zhang Daofan. Since 1925, Changyu had been selected regularly for the Paris salons and held exhibitions in local galleries. Before World War II, Changyu returned to China temporarily and then moved on to New York where he had lived for two years. In 1948, the Museum of Modern Art in New York held an exhibition of his work. Since Changyu 's death in Paris in 1966, the National Museum of History in Taipei has held three retrospective exhibitions of his works. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Sanyu, the National Museum of History held a grand exhibition which showed over 129 oil paintings of him. Since June 16, 2004, the Musée National des Arts Asiatiques-Guimet held a restrospective of Sanyu's 60 works. His works has been widely collected by many world-renowned museums and private collectors, which showed the importance of Sanyu in the Chinese modern art circle.
