Born in Chongqing, China, and raised in Beijing, this artist graduated from the Printmaking Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1981 and remained at the academy as a teacher. In 1987, they obtained a master's degree in literature from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and in 2010, they were awarded an honorary doctorate in humanities from Columbia University in the United States. They moved to the United States in 1990 and have been residing in New York since.
In 1999, they received the MacArthur Fellowship, one of the highest honors in American cultural circles. In 2003, they were awarded the 14th Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize in Japan. In 2004, they received the inaugural Wales International Visual Art Prize, and in 2006, they were honored with the 36th Lifetime Achievement Award in Printmaking. In 2011, they received the 30th-anniversary Achievement Award at the Audi Arts and Design Awards, and in 2015, they were honored with the Art Award from the Savannah College of Art and Design in the United States.
Their works have been featured in numerous significant international contemporary art exhibitions, including the 45th Venice Biennale. They have also exhibited at institutions like the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Tokyo International Forum, New York's PS1, the National Gallery of Canada, the National Gallery of Australia, as well as in South Africa, London, and other locations. Their works are widely appreciated and collected by art enthusiasts and collectors both in China and abroad.
