ZHONG CHENG

Born in Beijing, this artist graduated from the Sculpture Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1988 and completed postgraduate studies at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1995. They currently hold the position of professor in the Sculpture Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and reside and work in Beijing. They are one of China's renowned contemporary artists and notably the first Chinese artist to have their work permanently collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. They were also a finalist in the first Art and Design Awards and have participated in international contemporary art exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale.

Beginning in 1990, they ventured into the creation of hyper-realistic sculptures, and in 1995, they initiated the "Rockery" series, made from stainless steel, which has become a significant representative work. The stainless steel rockeries explore the relationship between natural civilization and industrial civilization.

Recent solo exhibitions include "Nowhere to Hide," 2012, Beijing, Long March Space, "Response to Form," 2014, Beijing, Long March Space, "None of Them for Now," 2014, Shanghai, Huqiu Contemporary Art Center, and the exhibition "Zhan Wang: Landscape," held in 2017 at the Long Museum.

Their works have been included in publications like "World Sculpture Encyclopedia - Oriental Section," "Fifty Years of Chinese Fine Arts," and "Complete Works of Chinese Fine Arts." They have also published academic papers, including "Conceptual Sculpture - Materialized Concepts."
