Born in Eberswalde in Mark Brandenburg, Germany, he studied at what later became the "Hochschule für Bildende Künste" in Hamburg in Willi Titze's class for "Free Graphics" from 1947 to 1951. He was appointed as professor at the "Hochschule der Bildenden Künste" from 1963-1968. Now he lives and works in Hamburg and France. 1960s was marked by experiments with various techniques; he began to work on sculptures and perfected his gouache technique. During the 1970s Paul Wunderlich studied Dürer, Ingres and Manet and produced a series of "Dürer paraphrases", in which he alienated Dürer's motifs surrealistically. Between 1964 and 1978, he won awards around Japan, Italy, Belgium and Taiwan. He held many retrospectives in Japan from 1994-1995, and a solo exhibition” A Different View” in German in 2004.
