Dai Ze was born in Kyoto, Japan, and grew up in Sichuan, China. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of National Central University in 1964 and was considered the best of Xu Bei-Hong’s students. His early works displayed strong influences from his instructor, and are mostly focused on oil paintings. He was later invited to teach at the National Beiping Art College, and in 1950 he began took the teaching post at the Central Academy of Arts where he remained until retirement. His early style is mainly realistic with extensive themes. Whereas, his latter works is a union of West and East influences, involving elements of Chinese ink and color blocks to portray a series of traditional Chinese landscape paintings. He made repeated visits to Korea, Tibet, Xishuangbanna, Heilongjiang, Gansu and other places to provide lectures and painting instructions. Between 1950 and 1951, he held many exhibitions in Soviet, Germany and Poland. In 1995 he held a solo exhibition in New York at the International Cultural Art Center. His works are collected by many museums, institutes and important foundations. Recent exhibitions include: “Dai Ze Flower and Poetry Exhibtion” (2013, Taipei, Artcaves Gallery), "30 Years of New China" (2013, Beijing, China, Permanence Gallery), "Teacher Path - Xu Beihong and Students Works Exhibition "(2015, Beijing, China Hanhai Contemporary Art Center).
