張萬傳 CHANG WANCHUAN (1909-2003)

Chang Wan-chuan was born in Tamsui and was a second-generation Taiwanese artist who went to Japan to study painting. He never studied painting in the academic art system but that did not affect the quality of his work. Instead, he pioneered his own avant-garde style. In July 1929, the Western Painting Research Institute was established with funding from Ni Jianghuai. It was a private painting classroom where Chang Wan-Chuan learned painting techniques and absorbed the impressionist style of the avant-garde.

Throughout his life, Chang Wan-chuan experienced the Japanese colonial period, the transitional period when the Nationalist government came to Taiwan, and the period of martial law and lifting of martial law in Taiwan. His life journey closely follows the historical progress of Taiwan, and he is one of the representative painters of the Taiwan Impressionism and Fauvism styles. Chang Wan-Chuan has been repeatedly selected for the Taiwan Art Exhibition and has gained some fame in the art and cultural circles of Taiwan, China, and Japan. He actively participated in art movements that shared his ideals and established multiple art groups, weaving a rich network in the history of Taiwanese art.During the lifting of martial law in Taiwan, he entered a period of tourism and actively participated in domestic and international exhibitions. As an artist who was devoted to painting, he faced historical changes and had a profound life experience. Chang Wan-Chuan was unyielding in his dedication to art and is a precious artist in the history of Taiwanese art.
