ZHONG CHENG

吳冠中 WU GUANZHONG (1919-2010)

Wu Guanzhong was born in Jiangsu Province, China. He graduated from the National College of Arts in 1942, and became a teaching assistant for the faculty of Urban Planning and Architecture at Chongqing University. In 1947, Wu traveled to Paris and studied at the École National Supérieure des Beaux Arts on a government scholarship. In 1948, he participated in the spring and autumn season Salon exhibition. Upon his return in 1950, he taught at several institutes including China Central Academy of the Arts, School of Architecture- Tsinghua University, and School of Arts Peking University. Aside from teaching, he explores the oil painting culture and the modernization of Chinese ink drawings. In 1991, he was honored the “Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” from the French Ministry of Culture. In 2000, he became the first Asian artist to receive the title of Corresponding member by the Academie des Beaux-Arts de l’lnstitut de France in its 200 years of establishment. Wu Guanzhong’s painting style reflects not only tradition Chinese painting characteristics, but also the combination of Western influences. He is a respectable artist in the international art field; he held multiple solo exhibitions in U.S, England, France, Singapore, Hong Kong and other major Museums across the globe.
