ZHONG CHENG

劉國松 LIU KUOSUNG (b.1932)

Liu Kuosung was born in Anhui, China, and settled in Taiwan in 1949. He graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University in 1956 and subsequently founded the "May Art Society," initiating a modern art movement. In the early 1960s, he became concerned that contemporary art was overly imitating Western styles and trends, leading him to advocate for the modernization of Chinese painting. Since 1965, Liu Kuosung has held over eighty solo exhibitions around the world. In 1959, he participated in the "São Paulo International Biennial" in Brazil and the "Paris Youth Biennial" in France. In 1963, he invented a special kind of paper, known as "Liu Kuosung Paper," with coarse fibers, allowing him to develop a unique painting style. In 1968, he was named one of the "Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Taiwan." He also took part in the "Mainstreams '68" international art exhibition at Marietta College Art Center in Ohio, USA, and received the "Outstanding Painter Award."

 

In 1985, Liu Kuosung was invited to participate in the "May Salon" in France, where his works were exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris. In 1991, he received the "Modern Painting Achievement Award" from the Li Chung-Sheng Modern Painting Cultural and Educational Foundation.
