ZHONG CHENG

王藍 WANG LAN (1922 - 2003)

Wang Lan was born in Tianjin, China, his pseudonym was “Juice” and he is a well acclaimed writer and artist. Wang Lan learned painting at an early age, he is best known for his watercolor paintings of Chinese opera characters. He was the president of the Chinese Watercolor Association. He studied at the Hebei Art Institute before becoming involved in the anti-Japan war activities for the Marco Polo Bridge Incident in 1937. After the war, his writing often used the anti-war rebellion period as background in reflection to the suffering of the time. In 1945, along with his wife Yuan Juan Qiu they co-founded the “Red and Blue Publishing House.” However due to the war, they immigrated to Taiwan and reestablished the publishing house there. In Taiwan he served as the president of the Literary Society, director of the Art Association, and representatives of the National University. In his later years, he settled down in the United States where he took the post as professor at the University of Hawaii, and taught the east Asian literature and arts department at Ohio State University. He passed away in 2003 in Los Angeles.
