ZHONG CHENG

許那 XU NA (b.1968)

Xu Na was born in Jilin, she grew up surrounded by art. Her father is a painter, and her mother a professor of the Department of Fine Arts at the Northeast Normal University. According to her own accounts, her father often painted oil paintings at home, and the smell of turpentine and walnut oil filled her childhood memory. Painting has thus become the method of expression she is most familiar with. She graduated from Beijing Broadcasting Institute in 1991, and participated in Chinese Art Exhibition in 1997. She also participated in “Step into the New Century-China Youth Oil Painting Exhibition” in 1997, and won the merit award. Xu’s paintings showcase mature strokes and simple colors, displaying the unrefined and plain innocence of an amateur painter. Her paintings reveal the wonderfulness and tranquility within her. Due to her passion for European religious paintings from the Middle Ages, her works emphasize spirituality and eternal values. The themes of her paintings are often poetic, through the artist’s hands narrate the beautiful sceneries of life.
